This is a copy of Vermeers 'Sleeping Girl'.

It's not simply a copy of this masters work. I've added symbolism of my own. The theme is, globalisation of culture.

It's the hat that started me off. It resembles the Mickey Mouse characters hat so much that it lead me to thinking about globalisation as it related to art and culture.

The Disney foundation with images and genericification (new word there ) of folk tales for mass consumption. Then the ipod which is having a major effect on the music we hear and how we hear it. Sometimes good and sometimes bad.

The globablisation comes in when these media controll the channels through which we receive information. When they exclude other channels simply by their dominant presence. They become so big that the emphasis changes to simply keeping the media machine running.

That's not what real culture is about. Culture is local and evolves locally in response to local things and people express themselves through that and see themselves reflected in those things. Totally subconscious of course, but real.

The globalisation of culture trys to get everyone to agree to the one theme, to be effected by the one rythm, whether it's theirs or not. So that brings me to the pink blob. That represents the false culture which creeps up on us as we sleep, as we absorb. It created a false 'La vie en Rose'.
